Welcome to our ultimate AmaWaterways dining guide! If you are planning a European river cruise, you already know that dining is central to the experience. 1. Overview of AmaWaterways Dining Venues

1. Overview of AmaWaterways Dining Venues

AmaWaterways offers several distinct dining locations on board to suit different schedules and preferences.

The Main Restaurant (Cello Deck)

Located mid-forward on the Cello Deck, the Main Restaurant serves open-seating breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Table sizes range from intimate two-person tables to large settings for up to 10 guests, featuring a mix of booths, round, and rectangular arrangements. While the segmented layout provides quieter, private dining areas, we recommend securing a table early if you prefer views near the windows.

The Chef’s Table (Violin Deck Aft)

Surrounded by panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, The Chef’s Table is AmaWaterways’ specialty alternative dining venue. It features an exclusive multi-course gourmet tasting menu with a live glass-walled kitchen and dedicated wine pairings.

Pro Tip: The Chef’s Table is completely complimentary, but seating is limited to 24 guests per evening. Make your reservation at the front desk the moment you embark!

Main Lounge & Observation Lounge (Violin Deck Forward)

The Main Lounge and forward Al Fresco Terrace offer floor-to-ceiling panoramic views, plush seating, and versatile dining options throughout the day—including Early Riser breakfast, casual lunches, afternoon tea, and evening tapas.

2. Breakfast Options & Schedules

Breakfast caters flexibly to early birds and late sleepers alike:

  • Al Fresco Early Riser Breakfast (6:00 AM – 7:00 AM): Light selection of pastries, breads, fresh fruit, yogurt, juice, coffee, tea, and a small buffet with scrambled eggs and bacon.
  • Main Dining Room Breakfast (7:00/7:30 AM – 9:30 AM): An extensive buffet featuring fresh fruit, cheeses, cold cuts, smoked salmon, cooked-to-order omelets, French toast, muesli, and daily fresh-baked breads.
  • Daily A La Carte Specials: Includes daily egg variations, power bowls, and fresh fruit smoothies posted outside the dining room each morning.

Health-Conscious Traveler Note: While the fruit smoothies were delicious, we would love to see AmaWaterways introduce a dedicated protein smoothie option at breakfast for wellness-minded guests.

3. Lunch Venues, Menus & Regional Specialties

All included shore excursions return in time for lunch onboard, ensuring you never miss a meal.

  • Al Fresco Lunch: A casual option featuring light salads, sandwiches, soup, dessert, and always-available staples like burgers and Margherita pizza.
  • Main Restaurant Lunch: Features a live cooking s
tation (serving pasta or regional specialties), daily soups, fresh salad bars, hot entrees, and desserts. On regional days (such as sailing through Germany), traditional German lunches and Frühschoppen buffet spreads are highlighted.

Complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks are served continuously throughout lunch service.

4. Dinner in the Main Restaurant

Dinner typically begins at 7:00 PM or 7:30 PM, immediately following the daily Sip & Sail cocktail hour.

  • Service Style: Dinner is a leisurely, multi-course European dining experience with open seating.
  • Menu Structure: Features 2 to 4 daily options for appetizers, soups, salads, regional entrees, and desserts, alongside chef recommendations.
  • Always Available Options: Grilled steak, salmon, and classic Caesar salad are offered every evening.

5. The Chef’s Table Gourmet Experience

The Chef’s Table provides a distinct menu separate from the Main Restaurant. Over the course of two hours, guests are treated to a multi-course tasting menu paired with regional wines selected specifically for the event by the ship's wine host.

  • Cost: 100% Complimentary (Included in your cruise fare).
  • Menu Highlights: Regionally inspired dishes prepared right before your eyes in the open kitchen.
  • Inclusions: Menu copy and reservation confirmations are delivered to your stateroom the evening prior.

6. Drinks, Sip & Sail Hour, and Bar Prices

AmaWaterways offers generous beverage inclusions compared to many ocean cruise lines:

  • Sip & Sail Cocktail Hour: A complimentary pre-dinner cocktail hour held every evening in the Main Lounge, featuring complimentary spirits, cocktails of the day, wine, beer, and appetizers.
  • Mealtime Drinks: Unlimited regional wines, beers, soft drinks, and iced tea are included at lunch and dinner.
  • Out-of-Hour Beverage Pricing:
    • Wine by the glass: ~$6 (€6)
    • Cocktails: ~$4 – $9 (€4–€9)
    • Beer: ~$4 – $6 (€4–€6)
    • Bottles of European Wine: ~$20 – $90 (€20–€90)
  • BYOB Policy: Guests are welcome to bring their own wine or spirits onboard to store in their in-cabin refrigerator or enjoy on their private balcony at no extra corkage fee.

7. Special Dietary Accommodations

AmaWaterways accommodates special dietary needs—including gluten-free, low-sodium, low-carb, vegetarian, and vegan diets.

Important: Inform AmaWaterways of any severe food allergies at least 30 days prior to departure. You can also meet with the Maitre d' and Executive Chef on embarkation day to review your requirements (e.g., severe seafood allergies).

8. What to Wear to Dinner: AmaWaterways Dress Code

The official dress code on AmaWaterways is country club casual / smart casual.

  • Breakfast & Lunch: Casual daytime touring attire (jeans, walking pants, comfortable tops, shorts in warm weather).
  • Dinner: Smart casual attire. Men typically wear collared shirts, polo shirts, or button-downs with trousers or dark jeans. Women wear casual dresses, slacks, or blouses.
  • Formal Nights / Captain's Dinner: There are no mandatory formal nights. Guests often dress up slightly more for the Captain’s Dinner or The Chef’s Table, but jackets and ties are never required.

9. Final Verdict: AmaWaterways vs. Viking River Cruises Dining

Having sailed on both AmaWaterways and Viking River Cruises, here is our honest comparison:

  • Where AmaWaterways Wins: Overall food quality, menu variety, and presentation were noticeably superior on AmaWaterways. The inclusion of the intimate Chef’s Table tasting menu adds immense value that competitors charge extra for or lack entirely.
  • Where Viking Wins: We felt the daily included wine selections on our Viking Danube cruise were slightly higher quality compared to the house wines on AmaWaterways.
  • Areas for AmaWaterways Improvement: Adding protein-rich breakfast/lunch choices (e.g., protein smoothies, bean soups, chicken sandwiches) and providing proper dessert spoons for ice cream servings!

Overall Rating: 4.5 / 5 Stars. The hard work, warmth, and dedication of the dining room crew made every single meal onboard the AmaLucia an absolute delight.
