AmaWaterways Rhine Low-Water Crisis: November 17 Christmas Cruise Changes & Compensation Explained

Navigating Rhine River Low-Water Disruptions: Ship Swaps, Compensation, and Christmas Market Planning

Published by Luxury Travel Docs

After a summer and fall of low water disruptions affecting European river cruises, we're now seeing what we had hoped wouldn't happen. Some of the early Christmas market cruises are being affected, too.

We absolutely LOVE Christmas market cruises. We've taken several over the years, and there's something really special about experiencing Europe's Christmas markets while traveling along its beautiful rivers. But this year has been particularly challenging for river cruising, with exceptionally low water levels creating disruptions across parts of Europe. And now, we have a clear, specific example of what that means for the Christmas market season.

Passengers booked on AmaWaterways' November 17, 2026, Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps: Taste of Christmas cruise have received an official notification letter from AmaWaterways detailing significant changes. Notably, the first major Christmas cruise affected by these disruptions involves AmaWaterways, the second largest river cruise company in Europe. As water levels dip in key bottleneck sections like Kaub, operators are implementing proactive changes, bringing critical compensation and rebooking policies into sharp focus.

Below, we break down the specific notice sent to passengers, how to track water conditions yourself using professional tools, and what your options look like if your itinerary faces a shift.

Inside the October 30th Notice: The November 17th Itinerary Shift

The sailing in question is AmaWaterways' 8-day Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps: Taste of Christmas cruise, departing Amsterdam on November 17th and ending in Basel, Switzerland.

The original itinerary was designed to showcase some of the most beautiful parts of the Rhine, including the famous Rhine Gorge with its castles and festive German Christmas markets in cities like Cologne and Rüdesheim. However, with water levels remaining extremely low in portions of the Rhine, AmaWaterways' October 30th letter prepared passengers for a very different journey.

According to the revised itinerary shared by a passenger on this sailing:

  • Days 1 & 2: Embarkation and an extended stay in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
  • Day 3: Travel to Antwerp, Belgium.
  • Day 4 (The Big Shift): Passengers travel by motorcoach through Luxembourg, concluding the day with a mid-cruise ship swap. Instead of cruising through the Rhine Gorge, passengers bypass that portion entirely via overland motorcoach transfer.
  • Days 5 & 6: Visits to Strasbourg, followed by Obernai and Baden-Baden. As noted in our updates, while these are in Germany, those specific Christmas markets won't even be open yet compared to the early-season markets in Cologne and Rüdesheim.
  • Days 7 & 8: Arrival in Basel, Switzerland, followed by disembarkation.

Free Online Tools to Track Rhine River Water Levels

Unless you are an expert in European river navigation, simple water level numbers can be incredibly misleading. To get an accurate forecast of water conditions 6 to 8 weeks before departure, we rely on key tracking websites and hydrological databases:

  • The German Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG): Essential for viewing 14-day water level projection models for critical bottleneck gauges like Kaub on the Middle Rhine. Remember that gauge zero is an arbitrary local marker; to estimate true usable depth in the middle of the channel, add approximately 110 cm to 120 cm to the Kaub gauge reading.
  • RiverCruiseWatch.com: While water level gauges tell you what the river is doing, this tool tells you what your specific ship and itinerary are facing by offering day-by-day route analysis across lock-controlled reaches.
  • AmsterdamExperiences.nl River Cruise Tracking Tool: An invaluable resource utilized by river cruisers to monitor live river conditions, lock statuses, and navigational constraints across major European waterways. You can access it directly via amsterdamexperiences.nl to keep tabs on real-time traffic updates.

Understanding Your Compensation & Rebooking Options

In its October 30th letter, AmaWaterways outlines specific choices if these itinerary adjustments become necessary:

  • The Onboard Modification Credit (Up to 40% FCC): If itinerary adjustments become necessary, passengers receive a Future Cruise Credit of up to 40% of their cruise fare. Crucially, this is NOT a 40% cash refund of the cruise passengers are currently taking. It is a future cruise credit that can be applied toward the cruise fare portion of another AmaWaterways river cruise reservation booked by February 28, 2027, and sailing by December 31, 2027. Full details are provided after passengers return home.
  • 2026 Rebooking Window: Alternatively, you can rebook onto any available European cruise of the same duration and stateroom category departing between now and December 2026 with no extra cruise fare charged. Crucial rule: You must take action and rebook within a strict 7-day calendar window of receiving the email. AmaAir covers necessary air changes, whereas independent air travelers handle their own adjustments.
  • 100% Future Cruise Credit: If neither option suits you, you can choose not to travel on this departure and instead receive a 100% Future Cruise Credit equal to your current cruise fare, valid for a new reservation during the 2027 sailing season.

River Cruise Packing List for Disruption: Hotel Detour & Motorcoach Essentials

When itinerary changes require unexpected hotel stays, coach transfers, or quick packing, having organized luggage ensures you don't leave items behind in transit. Here is our recommended packing gear:

  • Bagail Compression Packing Cubes: Group outfits by day. If you have to transfer hotels quickly, grab individual cubes rather than unpacking your entire suitcase.

  • Foldie Foldable Lightweight Tote: Keep one tucked flat in your luggage. During an overnight hotel transfer, pack 1-2 days of essentials in the tote so your main suitcase can stay stowed on the bus.
    [Check Price on Amazon]
  • Portable 10,000mAh Power Bank: Long motorcoach drives offer limited electrical outlets. Keep a slim power bank in your daypack to keep devices charged during transit.

  • Tech Organizer Pouch: Keep all chargers, adapters, and power banks in one dedicated pouch so loose cables aren't left behind in hotel rooms.

  • Compact Handheld Mini Fan: Useful for warm motorcoach rides and walking excursions, converting easily into a tabletop cabin fan.

  • Laundry Detergent Sheets: Wash essentials in cabin or hotel sinks without taking up space or risking liquid spills.
