Daytime & Excursions: Technical activewear, UPF 50+ sun protection, convertible hiking pants, waterproof trail shoes, and water sandals. Functionality and UV protection come first during trail hikes and Zodiac shore visits.
Snorkeling Gear: Personal masks with open sides and dry-top purge valve snorkels are vastly superior to standard provided options. Full-face masks are strictly prohibited.
Evening Onboard: Relaxed "Elegant Casual" (identical to a Viking Ocean cruise). Slacks, collared shirts, blouses, or casual dresses. No shorts in the main dining room for dinner is enforced. No formal gowns or tuxedos required!
1. Water & Marine Snorkeling Gear
Snorkeling alongside marine iguanas, sea lions, and sea turtles is a highlight of any Galápagos trip. While expedition ships provide standard gear, having your own high-performing personal items guarantees comfort.

Personal Mask & Dry-Top Snorkel: Ship-provided gear works fine, but bringing a mask with open side panels increases peripheral vision underwater. Paired with a dry-top snorkel featuring a one-way purge valve, clearing water becomes effortless. She likes to pair a neoprene mask band strap with hers to reduce hair damage and pulling. *(Note: While dry-top snorkels are available onboard upon request, they are not standard issue—bringing your own guarantees you have it.)*

UPF Swim Leggings & Rash Guards: Essential for strong equatorial sun exposure and protecting skin against sharp lava rock and jellyfish during shore swims. Full coverage means less time applying sunblock.

Water Shoes & Trail Sandals: Mandatory for wet landings where you step directly off a Zodiac into knee-deep water onto sand or lava rock, and water-based excursions like snorkeling and kayaking.

Waterproof Phone Case or Diving Housing: To take clear underwater photos with an iPhone, a dedicated hard-shell diving housing performs drastically better than flexible pouch bags, though simple waterproof pouches work great for quick Zodiac splashes and surface kayaking.

2. What to Wear on Galápagos Excursions: Trail Gear, Footwear & Weather Reality
Before setting off, be sure to check the local weather forecasts—though you should take all predictions with a grain of salt. Prior to our trip, we even used AI to check expected temperatures for our late September outer loop itinerary, but once onboard, virtually everyone agreed the information they had gathered (no matter the source or app used) was completely off. Late September typically falls within the cooler, drier season with cloudier skies, but we experienced significantly warmer and sunnier conditions than expected, which the expedition staff explained was secondary to an ongoing El Niño effect warming regional waters. Whether you are traveling during the traditional dry season or the warmer, humid wet season, packing adaptable UPF sun layers and breathable activewear ensures you stay comfortable regardless of what the forecast claims.
Galápagos terrain ranges from smooth volcanic ash to jagged basalt and muddy highland tortoise reserves. Dressing in functional layers and technical fabrics makes all the difference on the trail.

Dual Footwear System (Trail Sneakers & Sandals):
- Waterproof Trail Sneakers: Perfect for dry landings, rocky hikes, and damp, muddy highland paths.
- Trail Sandals: Great for wet transfers, beach walks, and rapid drying between excursions.
-
✔
Convertible Pants, Stretch Trousers & Cargo Shorts: Zip-off convertible pants let you adapt as temperatures shift between cool morning Zodiac transfers and hot afternoon hikes. Select cargo shorts and pants with secure zipper pockets to prevent things like phones from dropping out along the trail or Zodiac, keeping them handy for quick photos. Long pants are preferred for certain excursions—like visiting giant tortoises in the highlands—due to high grass and the muck boots provided.

UPF 50+ Sun Shirts & Tops: Technical UPF long-sleeve tops block strong equatorial UV rays while keeping you cool and dry on unshaded island trails.

✔
Sun Hats, Buffs & Eyewear Protection: Pair a wide-brim sun hat or Panama fedora for trail walks with a fitted baseball cap for windy Zodiac transit. A neck gaiter or Buff keeps long hair under control for excursions and shields your neck from sun exposure (we brought two each—one for snorkeling head cover and one for neck coverage during land hikes). High-quality polarized sunglasses are essential to cut equatorial glare off open water and white volcanic sands.

Lightweight Rain Jackets: Essential for misty, cooler highland excursions (such as visiting giant tortoise reserves). While luxury lines supply ponchos, bringing a light rain jacket with a hood and zip pockets offers superior mobility, storage, and looks better in photos.

3. Onboard Evening Wear & Cabin Hacks
The onboard environment across luxury expedition ships is relaxed and welcoming, mirroring the dress code of European river cruises. For an 8-day cruise evening wardrobe, she typically brings about three pairs of stretchy pull-on slacks (Zac & Rachel / Gloria Vanderbilt Slacks), three blouses or sweaters to rotate, and one casual dress. He brings two pairs of slacks (Greg Norman Golf Pants / Eddie Bauer Rainier Pants) and about four mix-and-match shirts (we love UPF shirts that can be worn for excursions too).
-
✔
Casual Evening Wear & Lightweight Shoes: Dinner attire consists of casual slacks, collared shirts, blouses, or simple casual dresses paired with comfortable flat walking shoes or oxfords.
Dining Room Rule: While relaxed, shorts are strictly prohibited in the main dining room for dinner.

Heavy-Duty Magnetic Hooks: Stateroom walls and balcony frames are metal! Bringing strong magnetic hooks creates immediate drying racks for damp rash guards, swim leggings, and hats.

✔
Laundry Detergent Sheets: Pack laundry detergent sheets for easy in-sink rinses of swim garments, socks, and rash guards between outings.
Earth Breeze Laundry Sheets -
✔
Quick-Drying Hair Styler: Daily excursion schedules leave small windows between returning from late-afternoon water activities and attending pre-dinner briefings. A fast-drying styling brush helps handle wet hair quickly.

4. What to Leave Behind & Health Basics
Save valuable luggage weight and avoid packing items that are either provided onboard or prohibited by Galápagos National Park rules.
| Category | Recommendation | Key Insight & Operational Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Backpack | LEAVE AT HOME | A complimentary expedition daypack with a custom rain cover is provided upon embarkation for shore excursions. |
| Water Bottle | LEAVE AT HOME | Ships supply a high-quality, reusable metal flask upon arrival to use during excursions and keep afterwards. |
| Full-Face Snorkel Mask | DO NOT BRING | Strictly prohibited by expedition teams due to safety concerns and carbon dioxide buildup risks. Use traditional masks. |
| Heavy Binoculars | LEAVE AT HOME | Wildlife is astonishingly close. Unless you want a tiny pocket pair for far-off marine birds, heavy optics are unnecessary weight. Silversea provides larger binoculars in your suite. |
| Sunscreen | Face-Specific Only | General body sunblock is supplied onboard. Park rules mandate reef-safe formulas free from Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. Bring your preferred facial sunscreen if sensitive. |
| Insect Repellent | SKIP / WIPES ONLY | Bugs are rare on coastal walks. For highland visits, the crew provides natural repellent. Repellent wipes are fine, but heavy spray cans are unnecessary. |
| First Aid & OTC Meds | BRING YOUR OWN | Expedition ships carry medical staff, but there are no onboard shops for basic OTC items (seasickness remedies, pain relievers, blister care). Remote island stops offer no retail stores. |
