Best Viking Ocean Cruise Cabins: Which Stateroom Is Really Worth It?

Before you put down thousands of dollars on a Viking Ocean cruise, there’s one decision that can quietly shape your entire experience: choosing the right cabin.

On Viking Ocean, the most expensive stateroom isn’t always the best one—and upgrading doesn’t always mean more value.

The best Viking Ocean cabin depends on your travel style, budget, motion sensitivity, itinerary, and how you actually spend your time onboard.

In this guide, we break down every Viking Ocean stateroom category, explain what really changes between them, compare cost versus perks, and share our personal sweet spots after sailing in almost all of them.

Key Factors That Matter When Choosing a Viking Ocean Cabin

Before comparing stateroom categories, it’s important to understand the factors that actually affect how your cabin will feel day to day.

1. Time Spent in Your Cabin

Some travelers use their cabin only to sleep and shower. Others relax there, read, enjoy the balcony, or unwind between excursions. If you plan to spend a lot of time in your stateroom, space and layout matter more. If not, you may not need to upgrade.

2. Season & Itinerary

Viking sails in both warm and cold climates, and that changes how a cabin feels.

  • On warm itineraries, balconies become part of your living space.

  • On cooler itineraries, you’ll likely spend more time indoors, making layout and comfort more important.

The same cabin can feel very different depending on where—and when—you sail.

3. Budget Reality

For some travelers, the cabin is the experience. Others want to stretch their cruise budget for:

  • Optional excursions

  • Drink packages

  • Or simply cruising more often

On Viking Ocean, daily cost differences between cabin categories can be significant, and we’ll compare those later in this post.

4. Noise, Accessibility & Motion Sensitivity

  • Midship, lower decks tend to feel the most stable.

  • Decks 4 and 5 are often quieter and avoid overhead public spaces.

  • Viking has very limited ADA-compliant cabins, so accessibility planning should happen early.

If you’re prone to motion sickness, we recommend avoiding extreme forward or aft cabins.

Understanding Viking Ocean Cabin Perks

Across Viking Ocean stateroom categories, differences usually show up in:

  • Dining reservation windows

  • Excursion booking priority

  • Mini-bar inclusions

  • Laundry services

We’ll highlight these as we go category by category.

Note: On newer Viking ships, you may hear us say “up to” when referencing square footage. That’s because balcony sizes and layouts can vary slightly by ship.

Viking Ocean Veranda Stateroom (Entry Level)

  • Location: Lower decks (V1 forward, V2 aft)

  • Size: Up to 288 sq ft, including balcony

Even at this entry level, you receive:

  • Included shore excursions

  • Full access to the Nordic Spa & thermal suite

  • Enrichment lectures and lounges

  • Complimentary 24-hour room service

Where Veranda differs:

  • No in-room coffee machine

  • Mini-bar without alcohol (not replenished)

  • Laundry via complimentary self-service launderettes

  • Dining reservations open onboard

  • Included excursions book 130 days prior

For travelers focused on ports and public spaces, this category delivers excellent value.

Veranda (V) or Deluxe Veranda (DV) Stateroom

Bathroom in Veranda (V),  Deluxe Veranda (DV) and Penthouse Veranda (PV) Staterooms

Deluxe Veranda Stateroom (Most Popular)

  • Categories: DV6–DV1 (location difference only)

  • Layout: Same as Veranda

What improves:

  • Better ship location

  • Mini-bar replenished daily (no alcohol)

  • Espresso machine in room

  • Dining reservations open 60 days prior

  • Excursion booking opens 137 days prior

This is the most commonly booked cabin on Viking Ocean—and for good reason.

Penthouse Veranda Stateroom

  • Categories: P3–P1 (Decks 3–6)

  • Size: Up to 360 sq ft

What changes:

  • Slightly wider cabin

  • More storage at foot of bed

  • Sofa seating

  • Alcohol included in mini-bar

  • Pressing and shoe shine included

  • Dining reservations at 70 days

  • Excursion booking at 147 days

📌 Note: Some penthouse verandas have swinging balcony doors instead of sliders.

Penthouse Junior Suite

  • Categories: PS3–PS1 (Decks 6–8)

  • Size: Up to 432 sq ft

Key upgrades:

  • Dedicated sitting area with divider

  • Second TV

  • Larger bathroom with double sinks

  • Full laundry service included

  • Dining reservations at 80 days

  • Excursions at 160 days

There are also two accessible suites per ship in this category with modified layouts.

Explorer Suite

  • Categories: E3–E1 (Forward or Aft)

  • Size: Up to 1,215 sq ft

Explorer Suites offer:

  • Separate living, dining, and sleeping areas

  • Large balconies (some wraparound)

  • Premium booking windows

  • Apartment-like layout

In our opinion, you’re paying primarily for space and separation, not dramatically different perks.

Owner’s Suite (One Per Ship)

  • Location: Deck 7

  • Size: 1,488 sq ft

Highlights:

  • Private dry sauna with ocean view

  • Private library

  • Boardroom-style dining space

  • One private shore excursion

  • Highest booking priority

We haven’t stayed here—but it’s unmistakably Viking at its most indulgent.

Cost vs Value: What the Numbers Show

Using a popular 8-day itinerary as a benchmark:

  • Veranda: $5,299

  • Deluxe Veranda: $5,499

  • Penthouse Veranda: $6,499

  • Penthouse Junior Suite: $8,499

  • Explorer Suite: ~$12,000+

  • Owner’s Suite: ~$17,000+

Relative to Veranda pricing:

  • Deluxe Veranda: +4%

  • Penthouse Veranda: +23%

  • Penthouse Junior Suite: +60%

  • Explorer Suite: 2×+

  • Owner’s Suite: 3×+

This is where diminishing returns become very real.

Our Personal Recommendation (The Sweet Spot)

For us, the Deluxe Veranda on Deck 4 consistently wins.

Why?

  • Quiet

  • Stable

  • Midship

  • Lets us stretch our cruise budget

We’d rather spend on:

  • Optional excursions

  • Silver Spirits package

  • Cruising more often

And with Viking’s no-children, no-casino atmosphere, it’s always easy to find great public spaces to relax.

One Honest Drawback: Viking’s Early Payment Policy

If you’ve followed our channel, you know this is our biggest issue with Viking. While there are workarounds, the early prepayment requirement has discouraged some travelers from trying Viking for the first time.

That said—we genuinely love Viking Ocean Cruises.

Final Thoughts

There is no single “best” Viking Ocean cabin—only the best one for you.

Know what matters most:

  • Space or savings

  • Motion sensitivity

  • Itinerary and climate

  • Milestone travel or everyday luxury

And don’t feel pressured to upgrade. On Viking, lower categories still deliver a premium experience.
