Make the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum a Destination When You Visit Saguaro National Park and Tucson, Arizona

Whether you are fascinated by the desert or not, don't miss visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum when you are near Tucson, Arizona.

Tucson is a unique city and the surrounding desert is famous for its dramatic beauty.  The dry sunny climate is perfect for people who prefer to see the world on two wheels or just want to experience a true Southwest flair!

As part of a week enjoying a Vermont Bicycle Tour of the Saguaro National Park and the Arizona Sonoran Desert, LTD had the pleasure of visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.  This museum exceeded our expectations. A beautifully laid out complex, which does a wonderful job educating and honoring the Arizona Sonoran desert and surrounding areas.

For authentic Southwestern adventures, Tucson and surrounding Southern Arizona won't disappoint you!  We spoke about this magnificent area of the United States with Tucson native, Army veteran and VBT guide Jim Harms while visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona:

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a renowned combination zoo, natural history museum, botanical garden and art gallery highlighting the diverse flora and fauna of the Sonoran Desert, featuring wildlife such as wolves, deer, bears, raptor birds and mountain lions in their natural settings and two aviaries; one for hummingbirds and the other for varied desert birds.

The Desert Museum is ranked on TripAdvisor.com as one of the Top 25 Museums in the US. Unlike most museums, about 85% of the experience is outdoors!

This 98 acre museum is a fusion experience: zoo, botanical garden, art gallery, natural history museum, and aquarium.  Here are some more fun facts about the museum:

  • 21 interpreted acres with two miles of walking paths through various desert habitats
  • 242 animal species
  • Plants from 1,200 taxa — 56,000 individual specimens
  • One of the world's most comprehensive regional mineral collections
  • Beyond merely an attraction, the Museum's conservation and research programs are providing important information to help conserve the Sonoran Desert region.
Our favorite was the Raptor Free Flight Demonstration which was not only educational but so exciting!  If you don't get brushed by a bird of prey while watching this, YOU MUST BE DUCKING!

LTD encourages you to travel with your children and visit museums of all kinds to educate children! For those with young children, there is a 'Packrat' adventure trail filled with places to explore, document and stamp.

Remember the sun is very strong in and around Tucson!  Wear your sunscreen and UPF clothing AND drink lots of water and even electrolytes when traveling in a desert region.  We love the Grayl Ultralight Purifying bottle for any travel - home or abroad.  Click the photo for more information at Amazon and support our blog. Thank you so much!

Following our exciting day visiting the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum, we checked into the Hacienda Del Sol which we reviewed last week.
