If you’re planning a cruise with Viking Ocean Cruises and wondering what the fitness and wellness experience is really like, you’re not alone.
Many travelers ask the same question:
Will you actually use the gym… or the spa?
After sailing with Viking and testing everything from the fitness center to the Nordic spa, we found that the answer might surprise you.
Viking takes a very different approach to wellness compared to most cruise lines—less about structured workouts and more about overall balance, movement, and recovery.
In this post, we’ll walk you through exactly what you get, what’s missing, and what we actually used onboard.
🏋️ Inside the Fitness Center
The fitness center on Viking Ocean ships is located mid-ship on Deck 1 and features equipment from Technogym.
You’ll find a solid mix of cardio machines, including:
- Treadmills
- Upright and recumbent bikes
- Ellipticals
- Rowers
For strength training, the gym covers the basics with machines for:
- Leg extensions and leg curls
- Chest and back exercises
There’s also a smaller free weight area with dumbbells, benches, and space for stretching or floor workouts.
On newer Viking ships (Vela class), you may notice a slightly expanded selection of equipment, but across the fleet, everything is consistently clean and well maintained.
That said, the gym is relatively small. On sea days, especially with more active passengers onboard, it can get busy—so timing your workouts can make a difference.
❄️ The Nordic Spa Experience (The Real Star)
This is where Viking truly stands out.
The Nordic spa—often referred to as the LivNordic Spa—is included in your cruise fare, which is rare in the cruise industry.
The thermal suite includes:
- Saunas and steam rooms
- Heated loungers
- Hydrotherapy pool
- Snow grotto (yes, actual snow)
The entire experience is based on a Nordic hot-and-cold wellness philosophy designed to relax muscles, improve circulation, and promote recovery.
Compared to other cruise lines where thermal suites often cost extra, this is one of Viking’s biggest value adds—and one of our favorite features onboard.
📄 Spa Menu & Treatment Pricing
If you’re curious about spa treatments, we’ve included the full spa menu with current pricing below.

This includes:
- Massages
- Facials
- Salon services (hair, nails, etc.)
Keep in mind that while the thermal spa is included, these treatments come at an additional cost.
💇 Salon & Additional Treatments
In addition to spa services, Viking offers a small onboard salon where you can book:
- Haircuts and styling
- Manicures and pedicures
It’s a more intimate space, but it has everything you’d expect for basic grooming and relaxation.
🚶 Staying Active Without the Gym
One of the biggest surprises?
You may not need the gym as much as you think.
Viking ships are designed to keep you moving naturally.
Highlights include:
- Promenade Deck (Deck 2): wraps around the entire ship (about 4 laps = 1 mile)
- Deck 8 walking area: great views, shorter route
- Sports Deck (Deck 9): putting green, shuffleboard
We especially love walking the promenade with views of the wake—it’s one of the most relaxing ways to stay active.
🧘 Recovery Spaces Around the Ship
Wellness on Viking isn’t limited to the spa.
You’ll find places to relax and recharge all over the ship:
- Pools and hot tubs
- The Wintergarden (afternoon tea + piano music)
- The Aquavit Terrace (perfect for wake views)
- Poolside and Lanai loungers
- Your own balcony
And because Viking is an adults-only experience (no children, no casinos), it’s usually easy to find a quiet space.
🌍 Excursions as Fitness
Viking includes at least one excursion in every port—but most are leisurely and culturally focused, not fitness-driven.
Each excursion is labeled:
- Easy
- Moderate
- Demanding
While highly active options do exist (usually as optional excursions), they’re not the norm.
However, doing excursions daily can still add up physically—especially with walking, stairs, and long days exploring.
⚠️ What Viking Doesn’t Offer
This is where expectations matter.
Viking does not focus on structured fitness programming.
You won’t find:
- A wide variety of daily fitness classes
- Large gyms
- Pickleball courts (yes, people ask!)
There may be occasional yoga or stretching classes, typically for a small fee, but offerings are limited.
Compared to lines like Crystal Cruises or Oceania Cruises, Viking’s approach is much more independent.
For some travelers, that’s a downside.
For others, it’s exactly the appeal.
💡 Our Best Fitness Tips for Viking Cruises
If staying active matters to you, here’s what we recommend:
- Plan your workouts before you go
- Download workout videos (Wi-Fi can be inconsistent)
- Walk the ship and take the stairs
- Bring workout clothes and swimwear
- Stay hydrated (bottled water is readily available)
- Consider using your stateroom for workouts during busy times
Simple adjustments go a long way.
⚖️ Gym or Spa: Our Final Take
So… gym or spa?
For us, it’s not really a choice.
What Viking does best is full-body wellness—combining movement, recovery, relaxation, and cultural enrichment.
That said, if we had to choose…
👉 Don’t miss the Nordic spa.
It’s one of the best features onboard, and the fact that it’s included makes it even more valuable.
At the same time, staying active—whether through walking, excursions, or the gym—makes it easier to fully enjoy everything else Viking has to offer.
❤️ Final Thoughts
Viking Ocean Cruises offers a wellness experience that’s less about intensity and more about balance.
If you’re expecting a high-energy fitness environment, you may need to adjust your expectations.
But if you’re looking for a cruise that helps you feel good—physically and mentally—Viking delivers in a unique way.
