Instead of heading straight out, we first drove through the city of Tauranga, getting a feel for the area beyond the cruise port. One memorable stop was at Shark Alley, a well-known local surf spot, where we were able to take in the coastline and watch the waves rolling in. Just across from Shark Alley sits some of the most expensive real estate in Tauranga—something we wouldn’t have appreciated without the context he provided. What is now a stretch of multi-million dollar homes was once simple farmland, later transformed into modest vacation cottages, and eventually developed into the upscale coastal properties you see today.
On the way to Shark Alley, Gary also pointed out the site of a fatal landslide on Mount Maunganui on January 22, 2026, sharing the story of the event and its impact on the community.
From there, we made our way inland, crossing the Kaimai Ranges. This mountain range has long been a natural barrier between the Bay of Plenty and the Waikato region, and historically it made travel between the two areas slow and difficult. Before modern roads, the ranges were crossed via rugged tracks used by early Māori and later European settlers. Today, the drive is much easier, but you still get a sense of how significant this divide once was.
As we descended into the lush farmland on the other side, it became clear why this region was chosen as the setting for Hobbiton—the rolling green hills and pastoral landscape feel like they were made for Middle-earth.
