Navigating Safe International Travel: The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, Prescription Medication Tips, and Travel Insurance

In today's dynamic world, international travel offers countless opportunities for exploration and adventure. However, it also comes with its share of challenges and uncertainties, from security concerns to health-related issues. To help travelers stay informed and prepared, the U.S. State Department has developed the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and accompanying Smart Traveler App. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the significance of these tools, provide tips on managing prescription medications while abroad, and emphasize the importance of travel insurance.

From https://step.state.gov/STEP/Index.aspx

Part 1: The US Department of State STEP Program and Smart Traveler App

In an ever-changing global landscape, the safety of travelers is paramount. The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) simplifies communication with the nearest U.S. Embassy in case of emergencies while abroad. Here's why it matters:

  1. Stay Informed About Your Destination: The world has seen security incidents and geopolitical changes that affect travel destinations. The Smart Traveler App provides crucial information about your destination, including travel advisories and real-time alerts.
  2. Prescription Medications Awareness: Consult with healthcare providers and be aware of local regulations regarding prescription medications to avoid legal issues abroad.
  3. Avoiding Protests and Demonstrations: The STEP app encourages travelers to steer clear of protests in foreign countries, as these events can escalate into violence.
  4. Understanding Travel Advisory Levels: The app categorizes advisories into four levels, from "Exercise Normal Precautions" to "Do Not Travel," providing clear guidance for travelers.
  5. Utilizing the App Without Data Plan: Even without international data plans, the app remains useful as Wi-Fi is available in most international locations.
  6. Usual Security Precautions: The blog also emphasizes common security precautions, such as guarding against pickpocketing.
A country officer of US consular services recently conducted an interview on Reddit, where he answered questions submitted to him.  His number one recommendation was to download the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program app. He also made some other points in this interview which are important for travelers to remember.

His first tip is something that LTD has already reviewed: know what to do with prescription medications.  Transporting medications that are illegal into another country can result in jail time.  This is avoidable!  AND as he pointed out, know what medications are available in other countries if  you run out of medications or forget them, especially those medications that are critical to your health.

Another tip is don’t get involved in protests occurring in other countries for your safety.  Violence can escalate at them as the State Department has seen on many occasions.  LTD was recently in Athens where violence and fires broke out during protests.

The STEP app will give you information about the country you are traveling to, register that you are traveling to a country and alert you via texts of impending danger.  You can easily search travel advisories for the country or countries to which you are planning travel.

Look Up Any Country on the Smart Traveler App

LTD searched the United Kingdom to find that it has a level two travel advisory due to terrorism:

LTD was Surprised at United Kingdom's Level 2 Warning

What do these levels mean?  Well the app tells you:

“On January 10, 2018, the Department of State launched improvements to how we share information with U.S. travelers. These improvements will provide U.S. citizens with clear, timely, and reliable safety and security information worldwide. Under the new system, every country will have a Travel Advisory, providing levels of advice ranging from 1 to 4:
  • Level 1 - Exercise Normal Precautions: This is the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk. There is some risk in any international travel. Conditions in other countries may differ from those in the United States and may change at any time.
  • Level 2 - Exercise Increased Caution: Be aware of heightened risks to safety and security. The Department of State provides additional advice for travelers in these areas in the Travel Advisory. Conditions in any country may change at any time.
  • Level 3 - Reconsider Travel: Avoid travel due to serious risks to safety and security. The Department of State provides additional advice for travelers in these areas in the Travel Advisory. Conditions in any country may change at any time.
  • Level 4 - Do Not Travel: This is the highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks. During an emergency, the U.S. government may have very limited ability to provide assistance. The Department of State advises that U.S. citizens not travel to the country or leave as soon as it is safe to do so. The Department of State provides additional advice for travelers in these areas in the Travel Advisory. Conditions in any country may change at any time”
Each travel advisory will have the reason for the particular level, including items such as Terrorism, Crime or health issues.  It even links to what the CDC recommends for your health when traveling to particular countries within the app!

Even if you do not have an international calling and data plan, this app will be useful since most international hotels, cafes, airports, cruise ships and even city welcome centers have wifi available to you.

Use the usual security precautions when you travel always!

The most common security risk is pickpocketing! Don't let yourself be pickpocketed when you travel!  Use a security crossbody always!  Click here below to learn about one of our favorites that works for men or women!

Part 2: Prescription Medication Recommendations in the STEP App

Within the "Health" section of the STEP app, travelers can access vital information regarding prescription medications. Here's how to make the most of this resource:

  1. Consultation with Healthcare Provider: Seek guidance from your healthcare provider before your trip, discussing your prescription medications and health conditions.
  2. Understanding Medication Regulations: The app helps you comprehend the medication regulations in your destination country, ensuring you're aware of any potential challenges.
  3. Carrying Essential Documentation: Keep copies of your prescriptions and a letter from your healthcare provider explaining your medical condition, which can be crucial when dealing with customs or local authorities. We always recommend that controlled substances be kept in their original bottles, but consult with your healthcare provider to be sure if you are prescribed controlled substances.
  4. Emergency Contacts and Resources: The app provides emergency contact information, including local healthcare facilities and the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
  5. Storage and Translation Guidance: For medications requiring specific storage conditions or translation, the app may offer advice.
  6. Local Healthcare Services: Discover information about local healthcare services, including pharmacies and medical facilities at your destination.
  7. We recommend that you never bring substances, such as THC, that are considered illegal in many countries.

Part 3: Signing Up for STEP and the Importance of Travel Insurance

When embarking on international travel, your safety and well-being should always be top priorities. This section delves deeper into the process of signing up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and underscores the critical role that travel insurance plays in safeguarding your journey.

Signing Up for STEP:

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is your direct link to the U.S. Department of State, specifically the Bureau of Consular Affairs. It's designed to keep American citizens informed and safe while abroad. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to enroll in STEP:

  1. Create an Account: Begin by visiting the STEP website or using the mobile app. Create an account by filling in your personal information and emergency contact details. This information is crucial for efficient communication in case of emergencies.

  2. Register Each Trip: After setting up your account, log in to the STEP platform and register each specific trip or residence abroad separately. It's essential to do this for each new trip to ensure you receive timely STEP alerts.

  3. Provide Trip Details: When registering a trip, select the nearest U.S. consulate to your destination country. Note that "destination" refers to the country as a whole, not a specific city, state, or territory. The available consulate options will auto-fill as you type. Additionally, input the dates of your trip, the purpose of your travel, and how you can be reached while abroad.

  4. Stay Informed: As part of the registration process, you will receive timely STEP notifications specific to your destination. These alerts can include information on local conditions, safety updates, and more. Staying informed is crucial, especially in rapidly changing situations.

The Importance of Travel Insurance:

While STEP is an invaluable resource for staying informed about security updates, travel insurance serves as an essential safety net during your international adventures. Here's why travel insurance is a must-have:

  • Medical Emergencies: Travel insurance provides coverage for unexpected medical issues abroad. It can cover medical treatment expenses, hospital stays, and even emergency medical evacuation if necessary.

  • Trip Cancellations: Sometimes, unforeseen circumstances can force you to cancel or interrupt your trip. Travel insurance can reimburse you for non-refundable trip expenses, providing financial protection.

  • Lost or Delayed Luggage: If your luggage is lost, stolen, or significantly delayed during your trip, travel insurance can help cover the cost of replacing essential items.

  • Emergency Assistance: Travel insurance often includes access to 24/7 emergency assistance services, such as medical advice and coordination, translation services, and help in locating local healthcare providers.

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing that you have travel insurance provides peace of mind, allowing you to enjoy your journey without worrying about unexpected expenses or emergencies.

While you hope that your travels will go smoothly, having travel insurance ensures you're prepared for the unexpected. It's a wise investment in your safety and financial well-being during international travel. For additional resources, be sure to follow the State Department on Twitter and bookmark its international travel page for the latest country alerts.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, international travel opens up a world of opportunities, but it also brings challenges that require careful planning and preparation. By enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), you can stay informed about security updates and access vital resources from the U.S. Department of State. Additionally, travel insurance serves as a safety net, providing financial protection and peace of mind in case of emergencies or unexpected situations. With these tools at your disposal, you can explore the world with confidence, knowing that your safety and well-being are prioritized.

Self Defense for Runners: Tips and Products to Keep You Safe

We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Memphis jogger Eliza Fletcher but being runners ourselves and knowing many friends that do- please be safe! Walking, running, whatever- we must learn to protect and defend ourselves. We urge you to run with a buddy, run in public and well-lit places, carry pepper spray, or other self-defense items and take a self-defense class. Not just a one time class, but one where you continuously practice the situations so they become engrained in your muscle memory.

Many of us are not diligent about carrying self-defense items or practicing scenarios that could save our lives. Something so simple as being vocal when in a situation could make a huge difference!!

Some may consider carrying self-defense items an annoyance for something as simple as running, but just remember Eliza when you feel that way. Understanding self defense for runners is key to staying safe and protected on a run. Whether you run alone or with a group, in a city or in the country, attacks on unsuspecting runners are unfortunately becoming all too common.

Running self defense can be comprised of multiple different tactics: strategically planning your route, knowledge of how to fight back, and carrying self-defense products that can help scare or fight off an attacker.

Mexico is Open to Tourists and Some are Saying it is Safer than Ever! But the CDC May not Agree...

Mexico has begun the process of welcoming back tourists to their country and press releases are being generated at an increased rate.  Yet, prior to planning any trip, travelers need to assess potential risks.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) travel warning for Mexico makes those risks sound dire: The federal agency flatly recommends against all non-essential travel to the country, citing the high risk of contracting COVID-19. In addition, it warns that if travelers fall ill and require medical care in Mexico, resources may be limited.  But resorts in Mexico are going full-press to welcome visitors as you can see in the press release below.

On September 8, 2020, the U.S. Department of State downgraded the Mexico Travel Advisory alert level from Level 4 (Do Not Travel) to Level 3 (Reconsider Travel), which should boost tourism. Border crossings between the U.S. and Mexico have been restricted since March, but the restrictions don’t apply to air, rail or sea travel.

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico, Sept. 29, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The best beach destinations in Mexico have been through some challenges this year, but thanks to quick action and firm leadership, Mexico travel restrictions are being lifted and Mexico family vacations have resumed across the country. Travelers who desire to vacation in Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta might wonder "Is it safe to travel to Mexico right now?", but research shows how Mexico beach destinations are protecting travelers and putting fears to rest. Travelers can once again revel in the excitement of jetting off to Los Cabos, Nuevo Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, or wherever your Mexico travels take you.

NHTSA's New SaferCar App Hopes to Stop Deadly and Serious Recall Notification Delays

Unlike mailed notices, the US Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration's (NHTSA) government app will tell you about recalls right away.  With more of us taking road trips during the pandemic, why risk the safety of your family? It is one thing to miss or ignore the pesky recalls that occur for a minor bracket, but if the recall is about something that could cause injury or even death, don't get into the habit of ignoring and missing a serious recall.

In October of 2019 there was a major recall of 928,000 Toyota, Scion and Lexus Cars, Minivans, SUVs and Pickup Trucks.  Why? The same flawed design as the Takata airbags from years before: a risk of explosion given enough exposure to high humidity or significant temperature cycling.  Another 2019 recall involved Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling approximately 30,354 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan minivans for a seat issues.  In the event seat fail, the seat or seat belt may not adequately restrain the occupant, with the seat potentially being ejected from its location in the vehicle.

Studies show that nearly 40 percent of consumers avoid vehicle safety recalls because they fear their dealership will recommend additional repairs, according to a study from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

Bundling recalls with regularly scheduled maintenance is one way to boost participation, according to 52 percent of respondents, while 51 percent supported receiving incentives such as free oil changes or tanks of gas for complying with the recalls.

Is Your Driver's License Going to be Enough To Get Through Security Next Year? You Need to Check!

**2020 Update: The Department of Homeland Security has extended the deadline for full REAL ID compliance by a year. Adults aged 18 and older now have until Oct. 1, 2021, to ensure their driver’s license is REAL ID-compliant, or acquire another accepted form of identification — like a passport — in order to fly within the United States.

Starting October 1, 2020, U.S. travelers who are age 18 and up and don’t have a Real ID driver’s license or another  piece of compliant identification won’t be permitted to fly.

If you’re unsure whether your identification card is Real ID-compliant, here’s how to know: It generally has a star in the top right corner.  If you’re not sure, contact your state driver’s license agency on how to obtain a REAL ID compliant card.

Recently, the TSA issued a reminder that to travelers that they will need at Real ID, but American citizens will need the Real IDs for official functions like entering federal buildings and nuclear power plants also. A passport will still be required for travel abroad.

The agency initially imposed a deadline of October 2018 for enforcing the new ID rules, but since many states didn’t adhere to the rules, an extension was granted.

Don't go too early to get a new identification if you live in a state that isn't compliant. Here are the states and territories still non-compliant with Real ID requirements and when their extension ends, according to the Department of Homeland Security:

Anti Glare Yellow Lens Night Vision Driving Glasses Can Make Your Runs and Hikes Easier and Safer

When hitting the trails it helps to clearly see what may be in front of you to avoid missteps and falls, even if it's very dark and foggy.  "Night Vision" anti-glare specialized yellow tinted lenses provide protection from the elements and blocks glare and blue light, enhancing contrast and clarity.

How many times did you hear in your childhood, "eat all your carrots so you can see better at night...?"  We heard it ALL. THE. TIME.  Or have you seen movies where the military are wearing night vision goggles to go on their mission.  What they can see is incredible!  Other than eating our carrots, what can the average Joe do to see better when the sun isn't bright when traveling, exercising or driving?

We encounter all of these situations because we run and hike in all conditions, and of course travel to many unfamiliar areas.  One of our aged relatives who drives everywhere around the world, told us some words of wisdom years ago: "Get those yellow glasses that you see on TV!"  So to help prevent ourselves from falling on the trails when hiking and running we invested around $20 to get a pair.  We found a new piece of gear that we will use in more situations than we realized possible.

The glasses on TV advertise that "HD Night Vision Glasses" will help you see better when driving.  This has been debated by some experts, and there are lots of things you SHOULD do to help your driving vision, like KEEP YOUR WINDSHIELD CLEAN.  However, from personal experience, we cannot say enough about the yellow lensed glasses to help us see better when in low light conditions.

We ordered inexpensive glasses from Amazon, and now we keep them in every car and travel bag.

You may have wondered in the past how your dog can see so much better when out for that nighttime stroll.  Think about it.  Humans are built for living in the daytime and sleeping in the dark. The retina (the light-sensitive part of our eyes) has cells called cones (for seeing colored light) and rods (for detecting movement and dim light). We have 20 times more rods than cones (120 million rods and only 6 million cones), yet we still are not very good at seeing in the dark.

Xtrainerz Waterproof Bone Conduction headphones: A Flop or a Victory for AfterShokz?

The new AfterShokz Xtrainerz headphones are designed for swimmers and triathletes who spend time in the water in mind, but these earphones can be used for so much more.

We will admit that we are huge fans of the brand AfterShokz.  It’s the one brand that has met all of our expectations for quality of sound, battery life, safety and fit.  Traditionally we have used Treks Titanium by Aftershokz for all of our running, cycling and traveling.  And We are DELIGHTED to review these Xtainerz.

Although true wireless earbuds have been hogging the limelight over the last few years, there’s another type of specialized wireless earphones that are relatively unknown: bone conduction headphones. While they may give you the impression that they are strange, bone conduction headphones have deep-seated roots in the hearing aid industry.  Maybe you have seen things like the AfteShokz Trekz Titanium on big box store shelves, there are some who consider it to be a gimmick while others find them to be invaluable.

How do bone conducting headphones work?

Things We Learned about Ourselves in A Paris Train Station

Sometimes the convenience of what some perceive as luxury is the pleasure that makes a journey healthy and meaningful.

Recently we were inspired by our love of history, wine architecture and the countryside to plan an adventure to the Loire Valley. We belong to many online collaborative travel groups, some of which reinforce several things that may influence your preferred travel modes: carbon footprint, convenience, luxury, time, or cost just to name a few.

There are limited ways to get to and through the Loire Valley. Renting a car is an easy method to get around but the thought of renting a car at CDG gives one palpitations. However renting a car in the Loire valley isn't very difficult. We chose to rent in Tours. As suggested by our Airbnb host, there is a high speed train from CDG to Tours (and back). FYI the train station at CDG is easy and of course the regional train stations such as St Pierre des Corps are simple to use.

Got Wanderlust? Millennial Travel is the New Trend for Luxury Travel. Look Here for the Top 10 Trending Destinations!

Millennial International and Overseas Travel Trends for Vacation and Holidays influence where all of us will be going whether we realize it or not!

The Millennial - The largest generation is the new target for international travel. But what do Millennials want when they travel?

Adventure Travel is the overwhelming trend in Millennial Travel

Some of us may long for quiet time at a secluded resort with every whim taken care of, but the trends and desires of travelers is changing over time.  Adventure travel, as the name suggests, is not for luxury travelers who would plan only on the beach.  Adventure Tourism is one of the fastest-growing trends in the travel domain.  Defining exactly what it means is a little tricky. While for one group of travelers, adventure could mean leisurely biking and hiking tours, for the other group, it might entail base jumping into an underground cave in Mexico. So the main facets of adventure tourism usually include traveling to a distant location, interacting with different cultures and undertaking a physical activity of some kind.  According to Start The Adventure, adventure travel overwhelmingly appeals to millennials.  Mountain trekking was the number-one trip style sought by millennials, followed by sailing trips, island-hopping, music-related travel and foodie trips.

Completing the list of the top 10 travel choices are sustainable travel, spring-break, hop-on/hop-off tours, wildlife safaris, and active adventures.
