In a swift response to the ongoing conflict in Israel, a humanitarian mission unfolded as the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship, Rhapsody of the Seas, sailed from the port of Haifa to evacuate U.S. citizens. Early in the morning, the cruise ship arrived at the port of Haifa, specifically to carry out a humanitarian mission. The primary goal was to evacuate U.S. citizens and their immediate family members who wished to leave Israel due to the ongoing conflict. This mission was initiated by the U.S. Embassy in Israel and was subject to available space on the ship.

The U.S. Embassy in Israel communicated the essential details of this mission. Boarding began at 8:00 AM local time, and U.S. citizens were urged to arrive at the Haifa port passenger terminal no later than 9:00 AM local time. Boarding proceeded on a first-come, first-served basis, emphasizing the limited availability of space on the ship.

Reports from Haifa MyNet confirmed that the ship safely departed the port of Haifa and was en route to Limassol, Cyprus. The journey was expected to take approximately 10-12 hours, during which food and Wi-Fi would be available to passengers. U.S. consular staff were present both on the ship and at Limassol Port in Cyprus to assist and provide information regarding onward travel to the United States. However, passengers were responsible for arranging accommodations and booking their onward flights.

Rhapsody of the Seas: The Vessel

The cruise ship chosen for this crucial mission was Rhapsody of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean International. Rhapsody of the Seas boasts a gross tonnage of 78,878 and has a maximum occupancy of 2,435 passengers. Notably, Royal Caribbean had canceled several itineraries aboard this vessel due to the tense situation in Israel. Passengers were provided food and space but it is unclear if they were provided cabins for the 12 hour voyage.

MSC Cruises Safely Brings 800 Israeli Citizens Home

MSC Cruises recently demonstrated its commitment to passenger safety and well-being by successfully repatriating 800 Israeli citizens who were aboard the MSC Musica cruise ship. This repatriation mission was undertaken amidst challenging circumstances and security concerns in the region. Here's the remarkable story of how MSC Cruises ensured the safe return of these passengers to their homeland.

**Cruise Guests Arrive Home on Chartered Ship**

The journey was initially intended to be a 7-night roundtrip Mediterranean cruise, departing from Haifa, Israel, with stops in Limassol, Cyprus; Mykonos, Athens, Santorini in Greece, and Ephesus, Turkey, before returning to Haifa on Thursday, October 12. However, on the morning of Saturday, October 7, Israel was hit by missile attacks, throwing the cruise itinerary into disarray.

In response to the evolving security situation, MSC Musica made the difficult decision to alter its voyage, cutting short its itinerary and bypassing multiple ports. The cruise line took extraordinary measures, chartered the Mano Cruises ship Crown Iris, a smaller vessel, to safely transfer 800 Israeli passengers from MSC Musica to return them to Haifa.

**A Complex Repatriation Operation**

MSC Cruises launched a complex and swift operation to return its passengers safely. The operation was entirely financed by MSC Cruises, underlining the company's dedication to ensuring the well-being of its guests. By 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11, all Israeli passengers were safely back in Haifa, reuniting with their families and loved ones during these distressing times.

“We thank the Mano Shipping company for joining in a short time to assist in this operation,” expressed MSC Cruises.

While it remains unclear why MSC Musica couldn't return to Haifa herself, it's possible that logistical challenges, port operations, or other factors influenced this decision.

**October Cruises Diverted From Israel**

In addition to the adjustments and cancellations already announced for MSC Musica and MSC Sinfonia, MSC Cruises made the tough decision to divert all sailings scheduled to visit Haifa in October 2023 to alternative ports of call. The fate of cruises in November and beyond is still uncertain.

Eyal Atias, General Manager from MSC Cruises Israel, shared, “We are closely monitoring the situation and hope to resume sailings to Israel as soon as possible. MSC Cruises stands by the State of Israel in its difficult time and wishes for quieter days.”

**Other Cruise Lines Respond**

MSC Cruises was not the only cruise line to adapt to the challenging situation. Royal Caribbean diverted Odyssey of the Seas to different ports of call, and Rhapsody of the Seas had to cancel three sailings. Celebrity Cruises adjusted Celebrity Apex itineraries to avoid Israel on multiple occasions, and Celestyal Cruises took the longest-term step by canceling all calls in Israel through November 2023.

While no cruise lines have made long-term cancellations regarding sailing to or homeporting from Israel, the situation is being closely monitored. Further adjustments may be necessary as the situation continues to develop.

To help travelers stay informed and prepared, the U.S. State Department has developed the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and accompanying Smart Traveler App. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the significance of these tools, provide tips on managing prescription medications while abroad, and emphasize the importance of travel insurance.

In an ever-changing global landscape, the safety of travelers is paramount. The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) simplifies communication with the nearest U.S. Embassy in case of emergencies while abroad. Here's why it matters:

1. Stay Informed About Your Destination: The world has seen security incidents and geopolitical changes that affect travel destinations. The Smart Traveler App provides crucial information about your destination, including travel advisories and real-time alerts.
2. Prescription Medications Awareness: Consult with healthcare providers and be aware of local regulations regarding prescription medications to avoid legal issues abroad.
3. Avoiding Protests and Demonstrations: The STEP app encourages travelers to steer clear of protests in foreign countries, as these events can escalate into violence.
4. Understanding Travel Advisory Levels: The app categorizes advisories into four levels, from "Exercise Normal Precautions" to "Do Not Travel," providing clear guidance for travelers.
5. Utilizing the App Without Data Plan: Even without international data plans, the app remains useful as Wi-Fi is available in most international locations.
6. Usual Security Precautions: The blog also emphasizes common security precautions, such as guarding against pickpocketing.

A country officer of US consular services recently conducted an interview on Reddit, where he answered questions submitted to him.  His number one recommendation was to download the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program app. He also made some other points in this interview which are important for travelers to remember.

His first tip is something that LTD has already reviewed: know what to do with prescription medications.  Transporting medications that are illegal into another country can result in jail time.  This is avoidable!  AND as he pointed out, know what medications are available in other countries if  you run out of medications or forget them, especially those medications that are critical to your health. 

Another tip is don’t get involved in protests occurring in other countries for your safety.  Violence can escalate at them as the State Department has seen on many occasions.  LTD was recently in Athens where violence and fires broke out during protests.

The STEP app will give you information about the country you are traveling to, register that you are traveling to a country and alert you via texts of impending danger.  You can easily search travel advisories for the country or countries to which you are planning travel.

What do these levels mean?  Well the app tells you:

“On January 10, 2018, the Department of State launched improvements to how we share information with U.S. travelers. These improvements will provide U.S. citizens with clear, timely, and reliable safety and security information worldwide. Under the new system, every country will have a Travel Advisory, providing levels of advice ranging from 1 to 4:

• Level 1 - Exercise Normal Precautions: This is the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk. There is some risk in any international travel. Conditions in other countries may differ from those in the United States and may change at any time. 

• Level 2 - Exercise Increased Caution: Be aware of heightened risks to safety and security. The Department of State provides additional advice for travelers in these areas in the Travel Advisory. Conditions in any country may change at any time. 

• Level 3 - Reconsider Travel: Avoid travel due to serious risks to safety and security. The Department of State provides additional advice for travelers in these areas in the Travel Advisory. Conditions in any country may change at any time. 

• Level 4 - Do Not Travel: This is the highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks. During an emergency, the U.S. government may have very limited ability to provide assistance. The Department of State advises that U.S. citizens not travel to the country or leave as soon as it is safe to do so.
