When it comes to daytime clothing, excursions, and evenings onboard, Viking Ocean keeps things simple. You do not need a formal wardrobe, and you do not need to pack a completely different outfit for every day of your cruise. Viking’s dress code is relaxed, practical, and easy to work with, which makes packing much simpler.
Daytime onboard is completely casual. You will see people wearing everything from comfortable shorts, t-shirts, and activewear to nice casual pants and regular jeans while hanging out around the ship or enjoying lunch at the World Café.
On excursions, practical comfort comes first. Many people wear regular jeans, shorts, or casual slacks along with comfortable walking shoes like On Cloudsurfers or Hoka Cliftons.
Modesty Reminder: When an excursion visits religious sites—like churches, cathedrals, or mosques—Viking keys you in ahead of time in the shore excursion notes so you know when modest dress is required (covering shoulders and knees). Carrying a light scarf, a wrap like a Puli Wrap in colder weather or wearing lightweight long slacks makes this easy to manage on the go.
After 6:00 PM, the onboard dress code switches to "elegant casual" in main dining venues like The Restaurant, Manfredi’s, and The Chef’s Table. Technically, Viking’s written policy states that jeans are not permitted in these evening dining venues and should be reserved for the casual World Café.
However, in reality, you will see many guests wearing very nice, elegant-looking jeans in the evening—including tailored color or white jeans—and we have worn them quite often ourselves without any issue. In our opinion, what a store might call jeans, others would consider pants. But do NOT wear traditional work jeans like Wrangler jeans, or you may be turned away from dining venues (except the World Cafe) any time of day. Paired with a blouse, sweater, or collared shirt (Helly Hansen Polos for men, Land's End Polo for women), smart jeans can look very sharp. There are NO formal nights, tuxedos, or ball gowns required.

We use Bagail Compression Packing Cubes, and they make a big difference in some of the smaller Viking Ocean cabins. In Veranda or Deluxe Veranda staterooms, closet space is adequate but can be tricky to access due to the closet and bed layout. Cubes fit neatly into drawers and storage nooks.

Because Viking has complimentary self-service laundromats onboard (with free detergent included), you do not need a completely separate outfit for every day. We prefer to mix, match, and wash clothes as needed.
For an 8-day cruise, she typically brings about three pairs of stretchy pull-on slacks (Zac & Rachel / Gloria Vanderbilt Slacks), three blouses or sweaters to rotate, and one casual dress. He brings two pairs of slacks (Greg Norman Golf Pants / Eddie Bauer Rainier Pants) and about four mix-and-match shirts (we love UPF shirts that can be worn for excursions too).

We also bring 100 lb heavy-duty magnetic hooks to place near the cabin door. They act as a coat rack for heavy jackets or wet rain gear, keeping them off the closet floor. Suitcases fit easily under the bed (with about 13 inches of clearance), so storage is straightforward once you unpack.
