RCCL's Radiance of the Seas Sailing Cancelled Due to Propulsion Issues: What You Need to Know

In an unfortunate turn of events, Royal Caribbean International Cruise Line has had to cancel the current sailing for the Radiance of the Seas cruise ship due to significant propulsion issues. While cruise cancellations are always disappointing for both guests and the cruise line, safety remains paramount. In this blog post, we'll dive into the details of what happened, how guests are being compensated, and what this means for future Radiance of the Seas sailings.

Radiance of the Seas Propulsion Issues

The 90,090-gross ton Radiance of the Seas, a beloved member of the Royal Caribbean fleet, recently encountered propulsion issues that couldn't be easily rectified. These issues first emerged during the ship's previous cruise, and despite the best efforts, repairs couldn't be completed in time to ensure the safety of the subsequent voyage.

The affected cruise was scheduled to be a 7-night one-way southbound sailing from Seward, Alaska, with exciting stops at Juneau, Skagway, Haines, Icy Strait Point, and Ketchikan, along with scenic cruising in the renowned Glacier Bay. The journey was supposed to culminate in Vancouver, Canada on Friday, September 8.

Guest Accommodations and Compensation

Guests who were onboard for the September 1 departure have already been notified of the unfortunate cancellation and are being accommodated with last-minute arrangements. To facilitate their onward travel plans, the cruise ship will remain docked in Seward, Alaska, and will serve as a hotel for guests until noon on Sunday, September 3.

To compensate for the cancellation, all affected guests will receive a 100% refund of their cruise fare, taxes, fees, pre-paid gratuities, shore tours, and any flights purchased through Royal Caribbean (excluding any pre-cruise Cruisetours that have already been completed). If guests used a future cruise credit (FCC) to pay for the cruise, any extra funds paid above the FCC amount will be refunded, and the credit will be reinstated for future use.

Moreover, all guests will receive a 100% future cruise credit for a future sailing of their choice, with the condition that the future sailing must depart within one year. This new FCC will be available by September 22, 2023.

Royal Caribbean International has gone a step further by covering up to $600 (USD) of change fees for flights or other transportation adjustments. If guests initially booked airfare through the cruise line’s Air2Sea program, their flights will be automatically changed. The Guest Services team is readily available to assist other guests in making arrangements for their flights home, even if they didn't book airfare through the cruise line.

As a gesture of goodwill during this unexpected delay, guests onboard Radiance of the Seas will have access to complimentary internet, and all wine by the glass, beer, and other drinks, including alcoholic beverages, will be complimentary.

What Happened and Future Sailings

At this time, there are no specific details released about the exact mechanical problem on the ship, other than the statement that the "propulsion system experienced a technical issue which impacts the ship's speed." Additionally, there is no official notification as yet regarding whether or not future sailings of Radiance of the Seas may be impacted. Guests who have booked upcoming Radiance of the Seas cruises in the next few weeks should stay in close communication with Royal Caribbean for any potential adjustments or cancellations.

Radiance of the Seas is currently scheduled to offer just one more set of northbound and southbound Alaska sailings this year, with the ship's last Alaska sailing departing on Friday, September 22 as a roundtrip voyage from Vancouver. Following this cruise, Radiance of the Seas will reposition to Tampa, Florida, via an 8-night Pacific Coastal cruise to San Diego, followed by a 16-night Panama Canal cruise. From Tampa, the ship will offer various Caribbean and Bahamas sailings through early April before returning to Vancouver for the 2024 Alaska sailing season.

Not the First Time for Radiance of the Seas

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time Radiance of the Seas has faced propulsion issues. In April 2018, the ship required essential repairs on its Azipod propulsion system, leading to the cancellation of an 11-night sailing. During that period, the ship was operating cruises in Australia.

While engine problems are not commonplace on cruise ships, they can occur occasionally, impacting sailings and cruising speeds. It's essential to note that despite these issues, the ship's safety features, as well as hotel and restaurant operations, remain unaffected.

However, what followed was nothing short of an unexpected adventure. As Hurricane Idalia wreaked havoc in the Gulf of Mexico, not one but two cruise lines found themselves having to adjust their plans. We will explore Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas' unexpected twist, but Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Paradise also faced the wrath of Mother Nature. This time, however, they've decided to offer their passengers a unique "Cruise to Nowhere" experience, complete with compensations for the disruption.

Port Closure Delays Serenade of the Seas

Serenade of the Seas, a majestic Radiance-class vessel, calls Tampa, Florida, its home port. Unfortunately, Hurricane Idalia disrupted the cruise schedule and caused Port Tampa Bay to remain closed for a staggering 36 hours after the storm's closest approach to the city. The port only reopened its doors nearly at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2023.

As a result, passengers who were supposed to disembark on Thursday found themselves in a unique situation. Instead of ending their cruise as planned, they were granted an unforeseen extension to their voyage, spending an extra day at sea, courtesy of the unpredictable hurricane.

A Delayed Departure and a Unique Offering

Royal Caribbean International swiftly adapted to the situation, shifting the embarkation for the next sailing to Friday, September 1, with a departure time of 4 p.m. The cruise line took proactive steps to communicate this adjustment to the passengers, which, unfortunately, included the cancellation of the cruise's only port of call - the picturesque Cozumel.

In an email notification, the cruise line expressed its dedication to ensuring the best possible cruise experience despite the unforeseen weather impact. It read, "We worked diligently to ensure the best cruise experience and a comfortable journey for you, despite the weather impact. Unfortunately, due to speed, distance, and time, we won’t have enough time to visit Cozumel – instead, we’ll enjoy a beautiful Ocean Getaway together."

Embracing the Ocean Getaway

With the cancellation of the Cozumel stop, Serenade of the Seas embarked on a 3-night itinerary with no port visits. Instead, passengers found themselves with two full days at sea, surrounded by the endless expanse of the beautiful ocean. The ship retained its original return date to Tampa on Monday, September 4.

Passengers were advised to stick to their originally scheduled arrival window time at the Port Tampa Bay cruise terminal. It was crucial for all guests to arrive no later than 2:30 p.m. to ensure a seamless check-in process and to be onboard by 3 p.m.

Much like its counterpart, Carnival Paradise was originally scheduled for an August 31, 2023 departure from Port Tampa Bay. Unfortunately, the late reopening of the port post-Hurricane Idalia disrupted their plans. Port Tampa Bay, which finally welcomed ships back on the evening of Thursday, August 31, 2023, was too late for Carnival Paradise to conclude its ongoing 5-night Bahamas cruise that included stops at Bimini and Nassau. Instead, the Fantasy-class ship extended its journey by a day at sea, now set to return to Tampa on Friday, September 1.

This unforeseen situation resulted in the cancellation of the next cruise, initially a 4-night Western Caribbean sailing destined for the beautiful Cozumel, Mexico. Carnival Paradise, however, chose to turn this setback into an opportunity by offering guests a 3-night cruise to nowhere. This new journey includes two full days at sea but, regrettably, no ports of call.

Compensation Offered for Shorter Cruise

Understanding the disappointment faced by their passengers, Carnival Cruise Line devised a compensation plan to make the shorter voyage more enticing. Here's what guests opting to continue with the revised cruise can expect:

• A 1-day refund of their cruise fare, returned to their original form of payment. The processing time may vary, taking up to three weeks depending on each guest's financial institution.

• Pro-rated refunds of pre-purchased drinks or Wi-Fi packages.

• A refund for any pre-purchased Carnival shore excursions in Cozumel and the associated taxes, fees, and port expenses.

These refunds will be conveniently posted to guests' onboard Sail & Sign accounts, making them available for various onboard purchases, including drinks, photos, souvenirs, and spa treatments.

In addition to these monetary compensations, all guests will receive a 50% future cruise credit (FCC) that can be applied to a future Carnival Cruise of their choosing. Moreover, each stateroom onboard the shortened Carnival Paradise cruise will receive an additional $200 (USD) in onboard credit.

Cancellation as an Option

Recognizing that some travelers may face challenges due to the storm's aftermath, Carnival Cruise Line allows booked guests to cancel their cruise. However, this decision must be made no later than 10 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, August 31, 2023.

It's essential to note that Carnival Cruise Line, despite the extenuating circumstances, is still operating the sailing. Therefore, guests who decide to cancel at the last minute will not be entitled to a refund back to their original form of payment.

Carnival's cruise ticket contract (section 8(d)) states, "Carnival may change the duration and/or itinerary of the cruise at any time," with adverse weather and hurricanes explicitly listed as potential reasons for such changes. Moreover, section 8(c) of the cruise ticket contract clearly outlines that in the event of voyage cancellation, shortening, or changes for any reason other than mechanical failure, guests shall receive a future cruise credit.

Guests who have purchased travel insurance should consult their individual policies to explore possible reimbursement or additional compensation based on their chosen coverage.
